Questions to Ask Your Interviewer

Have you ever been in an interview and gotten stumped when the interviewer asks “Do you have any questions for me?”

Interviewers typically expect candidates to ask them a few questions at the end before wrapping up the interview, but this can sometimes be a daunting task. This part of the interview is not to help make the interviewer like you more, but it is to help show how interested you are in getting the position. It is important for you to prepare at least two or three questions that express your interest and enthusiasm, as well as show them that you’ve done your homework by researching the company/facility beforehand.

Questions to ask your interviewer can be broken down into three categories: about the job, about the company, and about the hiring process.

Questions To Ask About The Job:

  • What does a typical day look like?
  • Is this a new position? If not, why did the last person leave?
  • How long has this position been vacant for?
  • Who will I be reporting to? Will I be meeting them during the interview process?
  • What is their management style?
  • What would be my primary challenges if I were selected for this position?
  • What are the characteristics of someone who would succeed in this role?
  • What are some of the challenges you’ve seen people in this role or on this team encounter?
  • Do you have self-scheduling or how is the scheduling done for the unit?
  • Do you have 8/10/12 hour shifts?
  • What are the employee/client ratios?
  • Is call required for this position?
  • How have people previously succeeded in this role?
  • Can you tell me more about the team I will be working with?

Questions To Ask About The Company:

  • How does this organization feel about continuing education?
  • What is the company culture like?
  • What do you like best about working for this company?
  • How do you see the company evolving over the next 5 years?
  • How do you think the company defines and demonstrates its values?
  • What are the biggest challenges the company is facing right now and how are they being addressed?
  • What makes people stay with the company or facility?
  • How are employees recognized for a job well done?
  • What do you like best about working here?

Questions To Ask About The Hiring Process:

  • What is your timeline and what are the next steps?
  • Do you have an ideal start date for this position?
  • Are there any other important aspects of the job that we haven’t covered?
  • Is there anything else I can provide to help you with your decision?
  • Do you have any final questions to ask me, or is there anything I need to clarify?

Try avoiding simple questions that can be answered with a yes or no, or that could be found out by researching the company online. Be sure to wait to ask about salary or benefits until you’re in the negotiation portion of the process with an HR representative – not with the hiring manager.

Having your questions prepared shows the interviewer that you researched the company and the position, and provides you with additional information you may not have otherwise found out.

After your interview, be sure to send a thank you email to the interviewer and follow up a few days after for feedback.
